There are two basic types of smoke alarms - IONIZATION Type and PHOTOELECTRIC type. IONIZATION smoke alarms are generally more effective at detecting fast, flaming fires - fires which consume combustible materials rapidly and spread quickly. Sources of these fires may include paper burning in a waste basket, or grease fire in the kitchen. PHOTOELECTRIC smoke alarms are generally more effective at detecting slow, smoldering fires - fires which can smoulder for hours before bursting into flames.
