However, black and white varieties do exist. The long tail of the Phoenix rooster is black. These fancy feathers do not fall out when the rooster goes through its annual molt. The first president of the National German Poultry Association, Hugo du Roi, imported long-tailed birds from the Far East and set out to create a long-tailed breed with a hardier constitution. In 1974, the American Poultry Association accepted the Phoenix as an officially recognized breed. Present Status In the United States, Phoenix chickens were kept as early as 1924. The Livestock Conservancy lists the status of the Phoenix rooster as threatened because so few people own, raise, and breed them.
