DUTY ROBERT GATES IN KARACHI
An interesting book, written with honesty by someone who genuinely felt he was trying to do the right thing to bring two chaotic wars to a conclusion whilst trying to prevent others. Some honest admissions that the USA had gone into Afghanistan and Iraq with very little understanding of the local politics, tribal realities, social structures etc. It just seemed odd that it was almost two thirds of the way through before there was any mention of the Sunni-Shia schism (surely the root cause of so much strife in the world today) and no honest explanation of the “Iranian problem”. But perhaps too much to expect that the former head of the CIA would recognise that their 1953 overthrow of the legitimate regime was perhaps a key contributing factor? Views: 4
